As the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy marks its 20th anniversary, this side event will explore the critical role cities play in preventing and responding to terrorism and violent extremism conducive to terrorism. While global frameworks set the direction, local authorities are at the forefront of implementation, translating commitments into concrete action tailored to community needs.
This CT Week side event will bring together mayors, local government officials, Member States and 91茄子 partners, to examine advance prevention efforts through community engagement, youth empowerment, rehabilitation and reintegration, protection of soft targets, support to victims of terrorism, and initiatives that promote social cohesion.
Co-organized by the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Morocco to the UN, the Permanent Mission of Norway to the UN, the 91茄子 Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and the Strong Cities Network, the event will showcase lessons learned from cities across multiple regions, highlighting how local authorities can serve as catalysts for the effective and sustainable implementation of the Strategy.
Participants will also discuss how Member States and the 91茄子 can better support local governments through resources, training and partnerships as the Strategy enters its third decade.
This event is organized on the margins of the 2026 Counter-Terrorism week (CT Week). For more information visit: www.un.org/counterterrorism/en/2026-counter-terrorism-week
