Yet some countries are reportedly making side deals exclusively for their own populations. Such \u201cvaccinationalism\u201d is not only unfair, it is self-defeating.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u2014 <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UN Secretary-General\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-separator fusion-full-width-sep\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;width:100%;\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-sep-clear\"><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-7\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Today, the world has secured a little over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/app.powerbi.com\/view?r=eyJrIjoiNmE0YjZiNzUtZjk2OS00ZTg4LThlMzMtNTRhNzE0NzA4YmZlIiwidCI6Ijc3NDEwMTk1LTE0ZTEtNGZiOC05MDRiLWFiMTg5MjAyMzY2NyIsImMiOjh9&amp;pageName=ReportSectiona329b3eafd86059a947b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">10 billion doses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of the ten approved COVID-19 vaccines. As of 5 February, the majority of the vaccines were available in just 10 countries that account for almost 60 percent of the global GDP, says the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/director-general\/speeches\/detail\/who-director-general-s-opening-remarks-at-the-media-briefing-on-covid-19-5-february-2021\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (WHO). Around 130 countries, with 2.5 billion people, have yet to administer a single dose. Only one low-income country, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afro.who.int\/news\/africa-needs-timely-access-safe-and-effective-covid-19-vaccines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Guinea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, has received doses of the vaccine but has vaccinated about 25 people so far.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cScience is succeeding but solidarity is failing,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/en\/content\/sg\/statement\/2021-01-28\/secretary-generals-remarks-member-states-priorities-for-2021-bilingual-delivered-scroll-down-for-all-english-version\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">warned the Secretary-General<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> who has made the response to COVID-19 and the equitable access to vaccines the utmost priority for the 91茄子 in 2021. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-8\"><hr \/>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-9\"><h3><b>The COVAX Facility for Equal Access<br \/>\n<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/global.unitednations.entermediadb.net\/assets\/mediadb\/services\/module\/asset\/downloads\/preset\/Libraries\/Production+Library\/23-11-2020-Oxford-COVID-vaccine-05.jpg\/image1170x530cropped.jpg\" width=\"1171\" height=\"530\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Secretary-General continues to reiterate the importance of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/initiatives\/act-accelerator\/covax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">COVAX facility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; the only international mechanism with the largest vaccine portfolio that was established to ensure the global pooled procurement of vaccines needed for equitable access.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Agreements may already be in place to secure more than two billion doses to cover at least 20 percent of the population of the 190 participating economies, many of them middle and low-income, but COVAX still needs $7.8 billion to procure and deliver the vaccines by the end of the year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe need manufacturers to step up their commitment to work with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/initiatives\/act-accelerator\/covax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">COVAX facility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and countries around the world, in particular the world\u2019s leading economies, to ensure enough supply and fair distribution,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2021\/01\/1082362\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">added Mr. Guterres.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Echoing his call, the head of WHO, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/director-general\/speeches\/detail\/who-director-general-s-opening-remarks-at-the-media-briefing-on-covid-19-5-february-2021\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has urged countries to share excess doses \u201conce they have finished vaccinating health workers and older people\u201d and manufacturers to share their data and technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-10\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In early February, WHO and partners announced their plans to help governments that have signed up to the COVAX facility prepare their vaccine distribution programmes to protect their most at risk population. In January 2021, UN Secretary-General <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ant\u00f3nio Guterres <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2021\/01\/1083292\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">kicked off the campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> after receiving his vaccination at the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Adlai E.
