  {"id":30848,"date":"2017-08-23T19:31:06","date_gmt":"2017-08-23T19:31:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=30848"},"modified":"2018-04-22T11:50:56","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T15:50:56","slug":"emigration-and-food-insecurity-in-central-american-dry-corridor-focus-of-new-un-backed-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2017\/08\/emigration-and-food-insecurity-in-central-american-dry-corridor-focus-of-new-un-backed-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Emigration and food insecurity in Central American &#8216;dry corridor&#8217; focus of new UN-backed study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new inter-agency study released today found a correlation between prolonged droughts in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras \u2013 exacerbated by El Ni\u00f1o phenomenon from 2014 to 2016 \u2013 and the increase in irregular migration from these countries to the United States, the 91ÇÑ×Ó food relief agency reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe study provides an important insight into why people flee and the impact on the family members staying behind,\u201d said World Food Programme (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wfp.org\/\">WFP<\/a>) Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Miguel Barreto.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is perhaps this second aspect which makes this study stand out from much of the analysis conducted on migration from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras to date,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.wfp.org\/api\/documents\/WFP-0000022124\/download\/?_ga=2.213960087.102193405.1503476858-197666741.1485441955\">Food Security and Emigration<\/a>\u00a0shows the need to invest in long-term programmes to discourage people in the Dry Corridor from emigrating, and to reduce the risks for emigrants and the impact on the families left behind.<\/p>\n<p>The study indicates that a trend of younger and more vulnerable people are leaving food-insecure areas \u2013 especially in the Dry Corridor, a drought-prone area that crosses these countries.<\/p>\n<p>Family members left behind face the burden of paying the debts of those who have migrated.
