Exhibition: From Words to Violence: Lives Behind the Fields of Death

The exhibition offers a glimpse into the genocide against Bosnian Muslims committed in Srebrenica in July 1995. Photographs of everyday objects depict lives lived and lost, families torn apart, and the consequences of hate speech and indifference in the face of hatred. The exhibition also includes the testimony of eight young people, who were children in 1995, or who were born in the aftermath. Their stories and photographs bear witness to human resilience and the transformative power of love amid unimaginable loss. They illuminate a new generation keeping memory alive and fostering a culture of compassion and peace.

The exhibition comprises eight personal stories told through photographs and quotations of young people who survived the 1995 genocide in Srebrenica as children or who were born in the aftermath.
Each story is a testament to human strength and the transformative power of love in the face of unimaginable loss. The exhibition illuminates the lives of a new generation are beacons of hope who foster a culture of remembrance, compassion and peace.

Online Discussion - Art Remembers: Culture as Witness and Prevention

Aida ?ehovi? is a Bosnian American visual artist whose work centers on collective memory and genocide remembrance. She is the founder of ?TO TE NEMA, a nomadic monument honouring the victims of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide, composed of thousands of donated Bosnian coffee cups filled annually in public rituals of mourning.
At this online discussion marking the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, ?ehovi? joins other artists to explore how art engages with difficult histories and contributes to memory, justice, and prevention. The panel also includes historian and curator Valika Smeulders, actor and playwright Diogène Ntarindwa, and musician and educator Nur Ben Shalom. Chaloka Beyani, Special Adviser of the Secretary-General for the Prevention of Genocide will deliver opening remarks.
The discussion is Episode 9 of Beyond the Long Shadow, a virtual discussion series organized by the 91茄子 Department of Global Communications, to foster a deeper understanding of the legacies of these difficult histories and, by examining the past, to consider how best to build a just world where all people can live in dignity and peace.
