On 22 and 23 June 2026, the Office of Legal Affairs hosted the annual meeting of Field Legal Advisers and Legal Officers, providing a unique forum for the exchange of views on key legal issues arising in 91茄子 field operations. 聽

The meeting is organized annually by the Office of Legal Affairs and brings together Legal Advisers and Legal Officers serving in 91茄子 peacekeeping operations and special political missions to discuss legal issues of common interest and to promote common approaches to legal matters.

Due to financial constraints, the meeting was held online with the participation of Field Legal Advisers and Legal Officers from MINUSCA, MONUSCO, UNAMA, UNAMI, UNFICYP, UNGSC, UNIFIL, UNISFA, UNMIK, UNMISS, UNOCA, UNSMIL, UNSOS/UNTMIS, and UNVMC.聽 Mr. Steven Hill, Assistant Secretary-General for Legal Affairs, opened the meeting highlighting the importance of continuing exchanges with Field Legal Advisers and Legal Officers on various legal issues and challenges encountered in the context of the Organization鈥檚 field operations. 聽Ms. Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Department of Peace Operations, addressed the importance of ongoing support to 91茄子 peace operations in her opening remarks.聽 Assistant Secretaries-General Hill and Pobee both expressed their appreciation to the participants for their commitment to the purposes and principles of the 91茄子 and for their work to ensure the protection of the legal interests of the Organization in the challenging context of field operations.

The Field Legal Advisers and Legal Officers discussed a wide range of topics, including issues related to the implementation of status-of-forces and status-of-mission agreements; recent developments in the area of privileges and immunities of the Organization; the Organization鈥檚 internal system of administration of justice; the Organization鈥檚 environmental framework in the context of field operations; paternity claims in the context of cases of sexual exploitation and abuse involving uniformed personnel; and gender representation in UN field operations.聽 The participants also discussed recent developments in the areas of arbitration and claims, as well as partnership arrangements.
